6 Ways to Make the Most Out of Printer Ink
Printer inks are essential to anyone who does any computing, be it at the office or at home. While environmentalists do stress the importance of paperless computing in the interests of saving the planet’s resources, there are times when it is absolutely necessary to print out documents. Naturally, you would need printer ink for that.
Environmental consciousness aside, it would not hurt to save on printer ink and learn to use it wisely. Using printer ink cartridges wisely can yield a little savings, and saving a little money on printer ink can go a long way.
How can you make the most out of your printer ink? Here are six tips.
- Use your printer’s draft print mode. Certainly isnt’ the best quality setting in your printer, but if the document is not important and the result is very much readable, go for it. Draft print mode uses less ink.
- Back-to-back printing. This is more for saving paper rather than saving printer ink, but printing back-to-back saves money nonetheless.
- Use smaller font. Again, this is mostly for saving paper than printer ink, but as long as the document is still easy to read, it is fine.
- Do not print images unless you have to. Printing images uses up a lot of printer ink.
- Use all your ink. Even if your printer says you have run out of ink, more likely than not, there is still some left in the cartridge. Go use it all up.
- Buy compatible or remanufactured cartridges. Some people are iffy on ink refills, but if you are willing to try, you can go for that to save money on printer ink.
4 Ways in Which You Can Cut Printing Costs
If you print plenty of documents at home, using your inkjet printer you must have noticed that the expenses of paper and ink over time become huge. It hardly takes time to replete your ink cartridge, so what should you do to save some money. Here are some ways to cut down your excessive printing costs:
1. On Every Sheet, Print More Than a Single Page
This is probably the simplest way to save printing paper and it good printing PowerPoint presentations. For this go to the print dialog option and select Handouts from drop-down “Print what”. Next, select the number of slides you want per page. If you print only in Grayscale then you will also be saving the life of your ink cartridges. In the print dialog setting in Microsoft Word, you can find a similar printing option. Many laser printers offer a simple duplex option for printing on both the sides of paper.

2. Opt For Printing Multiple Selections on One Page
Don’t print a single selection but select multiple areas on the page, “clip” them, and print them later. This is good in case of laser printing and you can avail this Smart Web Printing application by HP for Firefox 2.0 and Internet Explorer.
3. Print Only the Selected Portion that You Need
Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Microsoft Excel & Word have a feature that allows you print only a selection of text. Select the part of the text for printing and then go for the “Selection” option that you will find in the print dialog.
4. Use Options such as Shrink to Fit and Print Preview
You should first use Print Preview to prevent printing just a few lines on an almost empty page. Don’t click blindly on the print button but preview first. In this way, you will not be wasting tons of ink or plenty of paper. Print exactly the amount that you want. Internet Explorer and Firefox have an option named “Shrink to Fit” in the Print Preview dialogs that shrink the content to fit easily on fewer pages. Microsoft Word has a “Shrink One Page” option that shrinks the document by a page by reducing spacing and the size of the text.
Ink Cartridges – HP Deskjet 6940 Color Printer Review
If you’re looking for a fast, networkable and affordable printer, take a look at the HP Deskjet 6940. This printer has been around since 2006, but it’s still available and is a pretty good bargain. There is no need for a USB cable if you network it through its wired Ethernet port. It is 17.7″ x 14.4 x 5.7 and weighs in at just over 13.2 lbs.
The speed and print quality of this little machine are just short of amazing. In draft mode this little printer will pump out up to 36 pages per minute in black and up to 27 pages per minute in color. To be perfectly honest, in draft mode, the print looks great. At it’s maximum resolution of 4800 x 1200 dpi, don’t expect anywhere near those numbers though.
HP Deskjet 6940 Ink Cartridges – The HP Deskjet 6940 uses the HP C8767W #96 Black Cartridge and the HP #97 Color Cartridge. The #96 holds 21ml of ink and is rated at 800 pages at 5% coverage. At a price of 28.95 that works out to just about 3.6 cents per page. The #97 holds 14ml of ink and is rated at 450 pages at 15% density coverage. At a price of 34.95 that works out to about 7.8 cents per page. Not the best price per page ratio we’ve seen, but you could certainly do worse. The Deskjet 6940 also can use hp ink cartridges #99 and the HP #100. The HP #99 (C9369WN) ink cartridge is part of the HP Vivera line of ink cartridges. It prints true to live color and provides fade resistant prints. The HP #100 (C9368AN) Ink Cartridge is also a Vivera ink cartridge that is used for professional quality black and white photos. Hp claims that photos printed with the HP 99 should last for 50 years or longer.
Overall, this is a nice little printer. Very good overall. It’s fast, networkable, and affordable. You can find this printer on Amazon.com for around 87.99. Power users may want to opt for the additional 250 sheet paper tray, but for the standard user, this printer may fit your needs nicely.
